4 Tips to Avoid Getting Sick
It doesn’t matter what time of the year it is, we are all susceptible to the occasional cold or flu. To maintain optimal health, action is required on our parts. Here are four tips towards preventing sickness throughout the year.
1. Properly washing your hands
For years, our parents have been preaching to us about the importance of washing our hands. Did you know that the techniques used to wash your hands are what really prevents the transmission of germs? Recent studies have shown that one should scrub their hands with soap for a minimum of 15-30 seconds, avoid turning the water to the hottest temperature and completely dry your hands. You can wash your hands as many times as you deem necessary. This one of the simplest yet most effective way of preventing sickness.
2. Get your daily dose of vitamin C.
Vitamin C is great for the immune system, but new research suggests that it even aids in reducing stress levels, which makes for an overall healthier you. While over the counter vitamin C tablets and Emergen- C packets can be beneficial, it’s also important to partake of foods that are rich in Vitamin C. Oranges, kiwi’s, leafy greens and lemons are some foods that are packed with Vitamin C.
3. Make sure your home is “sick proof.”
Our homes are our haven but it can be the very place that makes us sick. Regular disinfecting of door knobs, light switches, faucet knobs and any other popular hotspots in the home is necessary. Bathroom and kitchens are the breeding ground for microbes because these places are moist. You should regularly wash dishcloths, sanitize countertops and keep the areas around the dish rack dry. Bathrooms must be cleaned and disinfected intermittently because it’s frequented by everyone in the home.
Sheets, pillows and sofa accessories should be laundered at least every one to two weeks. For furniture or fabrics that can be washed in the washing machine use disinfectant products that are safe to use on non-washable items.
4.Get Enough Rest
Can you remember the last time you slept at least seven hours? While getting a good night’s rest doesn’t indicate immunity from sickness it does promote better health. Studies have shown that there is a link between insufficient sleep and cardiovascular diseases. Sufficient sleep can lessen chronic pain and lower the risk for injury. Physicians recommend at least seven to eight hours of sleep every night.
